Katharina Gaenssler

born in 1974 in Munich, Germany, lives and works in Munich

The practice of archiving permeates Katharina Gaenssler’s artistic work. Drawing on an extensive collection of photographic images, she develops a visual memory that unfolds along temporal and
spatial sequences. Central to her work through 2015/16 were extensive series of images, which she presented in book form or realized as complex spatial collages. Gaenssler’s artistic practice operates at the intersection of photography and architecture. She analyzes and documents spatial structures and questions the fundamental conditions of seeing and perception in order to open up new perspectives on the relationship between image, space, and reality. In countless detailed photographs, she captures spaces through a visual grid. The individual images are assembled in the exhibition space into large-format, multi-perspective photo installations. In Ganessler’s work since 2018, while photography remains the medium, the individual piece can also take the form of wallpaper, textiles, clothing, fabric, a rug, a curtain, wall covering, or a screen print on metal, depending on the underlying concept.
